Korea-Germany Forum on Consumer Protection on Smartphones, in Seoul

Invitation 30 May – 01 June 2018

You are invited to the Korea-Germany Forum on Consumer Protection on Smartphones, taking place 30 May – 01 June 2018, Hotel Le Meridien, Seoul.

The ever-increasing digital transformation and the resulting global digital market fundamentally change our traditional conception of consumer protection. Data protection, transparency, cyber security and autonomous systems are just a few of the topics that need to be radically re-defined in view of this all-encompassing transformation of our economy. Most notably however, there is an inherent tension between the national character of legislation and the international scope of the internet. No country on its own will ever be able to take the necessary steps to safeguard consumer rights and shape fair markets in the international digital economy. Simultaneously, no consumer can be expected to isolate him- or herself from this market, no matter its lack of protection. Nothing makes this fact as apparent as smartphones, a device we find in almost everyone’s pocket.

Therefore, on 30 May until 01 June 2018, experts from civil society, the private sector, and science as well as government representatives will gather in the Hotel Le Meridien in Seoul to discuss how to ensure effective consumer protection and fair markets for smartphone users in the years to come. The participants will come from Germany and Korea and will share their unique views and experiences on a range of subject matters defining consumer protection on smartphones. The discussions will revolve around three topics:
1) Fair markets – how to ensure transparent and competitive markets and fair choice on smartphones.
2) Privacy and personal data protection on smartphones – ways to empower consumers and to protect them
3) Ensuring fair terms and conditions – how to regulate markets, settle disputes and enforce laws

The Korea-Germany Forum on Consumer Protection on Smartphones is a cooperation between the Korea Consumer Agency (KCA) and the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV). Germany and Korea are two of the most advanced economies in the world and pioneers of the digital transformation. The forum will serve as a platform to exchange new ideas, learn from each other and to establish lasting relations between consumer protection experts, members of the private sector and government representatives in the two countries.
