Grid infrastructure has become a critical bottleneck for the energy transition in both Germany and Korea. Despite ambitious renewable energy targets, grid expansion and modernisation are struggling to keep pace with the rapid growth of installed capacity. From optimising existing infrastructure to deploying smart grid technologies and AI-driven grid management, both countries are developing approaches that hold considerable potential for bilateral learning.

The upcoming two-day digital workshop of the Korean-German Energy Partnership offers an opportunity to exchange perspectives on current developments, technical approaches and practical experience in this field. It brings together relevant stakeholders from both countries, including representatives from ministries, system operators, and research institutions.

The workshop will offer a structured exchange across the following sessions:

Day 1 (20 May 2026) focuses on the expansion and technical optimisation of existing grid infrastructure to accommodate variable renewable energy sources, as well as the challenge of synchronising grid rollout with renewable energy deployment in both countries, followed by a joint Q&A and discussion.

Day 2 (21 May 2026) addresses modern and smart grid technologies, covering national digitalisation strategies, AI-driven grid operations, and best practices and research project results, with a joint discussion on bilateral collaboration opportunities.

This workshop is jointly held within the framework of Working Group 1 (Energy Transition) and Working Group 2 (New Green Energy Technologies) of the Korean-German Energy Partnership.
