[Interview] Why S. Korea's offshore wind energy potential is gaining global interest
A recent Offshore Wind Energy Conference between Korea and Germany took place in Seoul, focusing on collaboration to boost clean energy. The event featured an interview with Dr. Martin Henkelmann, President and CEO of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI), who emphasized the growing cooperation between companies in both countries.
The forum highlighted Korea's potential in offshore wind energy, with the goal of expanding its capacity to 14.3 gigawatts by 2030. Korea's west coast is ideal for fixed-bottom turbines, while the east coast offers potential for floating wind turbines due to its deep waters.
However, challenges such as grid expansion and balancing offshore energy with military activities and fisheries remain. Both countries aim to share knowledge to address these obstacles and further strengthen cooperation in the offshore wind sector.
